According to tradition, in the area there was the small kingdom of Petra, or Karakoli, as the village inhabitants refer to the area even today. It was built on the southeast side of a large rock at Stena Petras, near the Itamos (Agioneri) stream, where it dominated the mountain road (footpath) that Xerxes had opened so that the Persian troops could move from Macedonia to Thessaly.
During the Turkish occupation, Petra was besieged by Turks and Janissaries but without success. However, according to one version, as a result of betrayal or after having entered from a large aqueduct that provided the castle with water from the Itamos river, the Turks managed to invade the Castle and killed the soldiers guarding it. The queen of the castle, Roido, committed suicide by falling from the cliff in the Itamos ravine, together with her child.
