This is near the site of the final conflict between the Greek and Turkish armies during the liberation of Katerini. In this battle, which took place on 15-16 October 1912, Colonel Dimitrios Svoronos, who was an aristocrat from the island of Cephalonia, Lieutenant Colonel Dimitrios Nikas, and a 17-year-old volunteer from Crete named Kontaxakis were killed. The monument that was erected in honour of the heroes is located outside Neokesaria, just before the village’s plane forest (Platanodasos).
