At an even higher altitude, in the hinterland of the Pierian land, is the village of Koukos, at an altitude of 240 meters. Three kilometers outside the village there is the chapel of Agios Ioannis Prodromos. It is said that the name of the village may have originated either because earlier in the chapel of Ag. Ioannis Prodromos there was the famous “koukos” (cuckoo) clock, or because there were many birds of this species in the area.
