Katerini Railway Station opened in 1916. Its buildings are among the most picturesque and well-kept in the country. There is also the Fortress of the Railway Station of Katerini, a living landmark of the history of Pieria. It was built during the German occupation and survives damaged to this day.
The OSE (Organization of Greek Railways) timber impregnation plant was established during the German occupation. Its construction began in 1936 and its operation began in August 1939. The factory, whose chimney is about 38 meters high, produced tar which was used to coat the railroad ties used by the Greek Railways. After the war the factory contributed to the development of infrastructure for both transport and telecommunications, as well as electricity.
